Day 2 – The River Special

So, it’s day 2 of blogging for me.  What to write about?

I think we’ll start with what kind of started the brainstorming for this blog.

It started with a baby afghan.  Specifically an afghan for our great-nephew.  I made one and sent it to him.

Fast forward several months and his mom asked if I could make a spare one for when the first one is in the wash.  The request came with this picture – –

Seriously, how do you say no to this?  Off to the store I went to pick up more of the yarn.  In case you are wondering, this is Bernat Blanket Yarn.  It’s thick, soft and easy to work with.  It’s actually the yarn I first used to learn how to crochet.  In technical terms, it’s Gauge 6 – Super Bulky.  A Big Ball (their term, not mine) is 300 grams and runs about $10 regular price.  I am a big fan of the coupons (digital and the old fashioned ones) from Michaels, Joann Fabrics and Hobby Lobby so I can usually get one for 40-50% off.  Yes, I often buy them one at a time in order to get the best deal.  River’s blanket measures about 29″ x 39″.  If I remember right, it takes 3 Big Balls.  Why didn’t I write any of this down as I was doing it?  Oh yeah, because I didn’t realize I would be making multiples of it or selling them.

Fast forward several more months and I hear that he needs a third blanket . . . for when he is with the sitter.  Apparently his mom is learning to crochet in order to make it but is finding that it’s not as simple as it looks.  Yes, it’s a simple pattern.  But, you have to learn the basics of crochet before (or as you go) in order to make it.

I’m sure his mom, who is a very smart and talented woman) will master it.  But, in the meantime, I will be making another one for him.  That’s my job as a great-aunt, right?  Well, that and sneaking them off to the kitchen to have cookies or cupcakes before dinner.

His love of this blanket made me realize that there is a market for this . . . even the stuff I make.  I always felt that what I make isn’t really good enough to even give away, with my apologies.  But, this made me realize that I don’t always give myself enough credit.  Especially where anything creative is concerned.

The wheels began to turn and eventually I decided I needed a blog and website.  I will post things for sale as I get them made.  There are always multiple partially finished projects roaming around my house.  Some are requested items.  Some are things I just found interesting and wanted to make.  Some are in hopes of really starting the store part of this website.

I will share pictures of Baby River’s afghan when it’s finished.

Again, a journey of 1,000 miles and all that stuff.

Peace, Love & Crochet

  1. That is so sweet that he loves it so much he needs three of them!! You really put the “Great” in great aunt!! I always felt exactly the same as you – making things as gifts and giving them with apologies. It’s really only been very recently that I have built up confidence in what I make and I’ve been crocheting for almost my entire life. I still haven’t jumped in to selling what I make but it’s really only because I have a huge list of things that I want to make for myself or things I’ve already promised as gifts. My goal for last year was to start my crochet blog. My goal for next year is to sell. Considering how much your great nephew loves that blanket I’m sure you’ll be selling things as quick as you make them!! 😀
